Product Focus
What makes a good coloured pencil / marker / paint?
It’s mainly about the colour. Use good quality, strong pigments and drawings and paintings are brighter, richer and more rewarding for the artist, whether a child or an adult. Durability is important too, especially when dealing with young children. A broken lead in a pencil can be frustrating for a young child – Lyra’s extra strong leads don’t break easily, even if the pencil is dropped from a height.
Also, ensure that the drawing/colouring tool caters to the right age group - Lyra products are categorised according the user age & experience levels, to make it easy to choose.
My child just turned 2. Are there any art products that are suitable for him?
Lyra has a wide range of products for all age ranges and all levels of abilities. For 2+ children, check out the Giotto Be-bè range - everything from finger paints to modelling dough, all designed specially to be easy to use and safe for this important age group.
Does Lyra use washable inks for markers, pens and paints?
Lyra’s products for children are designed to meet the needs of the parents as well as the children. That’s why many feature washable inks, particularly those designed for younger children, for whom ‘accidents’ are inevitable. For example, many of the Giotto Be-bè products, designed for kids 2 and up, are designed to be easily washable.
My child enjoys using a chunky Lyra pencil that’s easy for his small hands to grip. Is there any sharpener available for these thicker pencils?
Of course! A great pencil is hardly useful without the right sharpener to go with it. Most of our sharpeners accommodate pencils up to 11mm diameter, which will easily fit our chunkier pencils, such as the Lyra Ferby, which is 10mm in diameter. They are also designed to fit the three primary pencil shapes you’ll find among Lyra pencils - round, hexagonal or triangular comfort grip.
Safety Concerns
Are Lyra products safe to use?
Child safety is a multi-faceted issue. Product safety is one important aspect, and Lyra is serious about designing and manufacturing products that are as safe as practical. Lyra products meet stringent safety requirements set in Europe (CE), USA (AP) and also the German Spiel Gut recommendation for toys. Among other things, Lyra products are tested for physical hazards, flammability and toxicity.
New innovations to improve safety are always being sought - take for example the ventilated, choke-proof caps on our fibre pens. At a certain age, almost every child like to put things in their mouths, and fibre pen caps are just the right size. Lyra fibre pen caps are ventilated, so even if swallowed and lodged in the throat, the child can still breathe until the cap can be safely removed.
My child has sensitive skin. Are Lyra products dermatologically tested?
Yes, all Lyra products are dermatologically tested to minimise the risk of allergic or other adverse reactions.
Does Lyra practice environmentally responsible manufacturing?
At Lyra, we are concerned about adequate care for the environment and environmental sustainability. After all, it is the world all our children will be growing up in, and we want it to remain beautiful and colourful.
Many of Lyra’s products use natural materials such as wood and graphite. With the demands on our ecosystem growing, it is important to us that the materials we use come from sources that practice eco-friendly, sustainable methods. To that end, Lyra uses raw materials that come from FSC-certified forests only. The FSC or Forest Stewardship council bestows FSC certification only on forest managers that respect environmental concerns, the rights of indigenous people, as well as national laws and international treaties.
So when you purchase a Lyra product, you’re doing your part to safeguard the environmental integrity of our planet too.
